Downingtown West quarterback Bret Gillespie attacked the East (formerly South) defense with a vengeance as the West (formerly North) pounded the South, 39-13, in the game’s 12th edition at Conestoga High School.
Gillespie made a shambles of the Valor Bowl record book, with new records for total yards (397), four touchdown passes, 323 passing yards on 15-26 passing attempts, and several other new standards, in addition to leading the West in rushing with 74 yards. In the process, the West/North scored all of its points before the East responded with two late touchdowns. The West also extended its winning streak to five games in the series.
The scoring started with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Gillespie to Avon Grove’s Jordan Harris. After the West recorded a safety for a 9-0 lead, a 41-yard strike to Harris set up a four-yard scoring run by Downingtown West’s Kessan Christopher. The lead mushroomed to 20-0 at halftime when Octorara’s Brian Muchow drilled a 27-yard field goal.
The scoring onslaught continued in the second half as Gillespie picked up from where he left off in the first half, throwing the ball all over the Teamer Field lot. First, he and Brewer connected on a Valor Bowl record 86-yard touchdown pass, which was followed up by five- and 12-yard scoring passes to Harris and Kennett’s Blake Davenport, respectively.
Rustin’s Rondell White, the game’s leading rusher with 104 yards on 18 carries, finally put the East on the scoreboard with his nine-yard TD run with 6:39 remaining in the game. Minutes later, his brother, Rahmier, tacked on the final six points of the game.
